Exploring New Delhi

One of the best metropolitan cities to visit overseas is New Delhi. You will find the city very active, and visitors from Europe find they are quite welcome. New Delhi is the capital of India and is filled with attractions you'll find interesting and unique to visit. There are fortifications, towers comprised of stone, mosques, tombs, and historic buildings, and bazaars offering much in the way of jewelry and handcrafted items. The city also offers a great deal of fine dining establishments.

The city is full of impressive buildings with interesting architectural elements inclusive of Rashtrapati Bhawan, Parliament House, the National Museum, the National Gallery of Modern Art and the Supreme Court. For readers not familiar with the first building listed, it is the residence of the president of the country. Accommodation options within the city include the best five star hotels right through to economy-style accommodation. Many key dignitaries have stayed in several of the five star hotels while visiting New Delhi.

One attraction worth the visit from an historical perspective is the India Gate constructed in the early 30s and based on the design of Arc de Triomphe in the city of Paris. The gate is a memorial which was erected in order to show appreciation to the valiant efforts of the soldiers of India who lost their lives during the Afghan conflict as well as the first Word War. The India Gate is a significant site from the standpoint it serves as the location of special events of India's military and government.

Another significant attraction is the Red Fort built during the 1600s. The fort was constructed when it was decided by the emperor to change the capital of India to New Delhi. Each year on the Day of Independence India's prime minister makes an address to the Indian nation from this location. The Red Fort, since its construction, has represented the country's political power. It is very popular with tourists.

The Jama Masjid which is the largest of the mosques located in the nation is also another well-visited New Delhi site. The Qutab Minar is a two hundred thirty eight foot stone tower and is considered the world's highest tower. It is also known as another major New Delhi tourist site. There are three train stations in New Delhi so venturing further out to visit other attractions besides those listed is possible.
